A decision on how much tax debt will be written off by a cash-strapped council is set to be made this month.
Stoke-on-Trent City Council is currently talking to at least 13 debt collection firms who are bidding for the chance to reclaim £5 million from residents who have failed to pay their council tax.
But the authority’s arrears bill tops £19 million and dates back to the 1990s.
Cabinet members will be asked to approve a write-off policy and wave goodbye to potentially millions of pounds in debt which has been deemed ‘uncollectable’ at a meeting on September 27.
A report states: “The write-off policy will be presented to cabinet on September 27, together with the first phase of bad debts that are proposed to be written off in accordance with the approved strategy.”
