Big increase in Business CCJ’s

There has been a sharp rise in the number of county court judgments (CCJs) registered against companies in England and Wales for the third quarter of 2017. Compared with the same period a year ago, the significant increase of County Court Judgments has caused risen significantly according to the latest figures released by Registry Trust.

For the third quarter of 2017, there were 24,698 CCJs made against companies in England and Wales, 27 percent more than the equivalent quarter a year in 2016. This went against previous Business trends for the past eight years during which figures had decreased year on year. The total value of business CCJs rose by 13 percent to £80,506,210, the first time since Q3 2011 that a relative increase occurred.

The average value of business judgments decreased 12 percent to £3,260. This follows the general pattern for the last six years, where, except for Q3 2016, average values have fallen.

The extent of the increase in business judgments was largely down to a 40 percent rise, to 16,479, in the total number of CCJs registered against companies. There was a smaller increase of eight percent, to 8,219, in CCJs against the generally smaller unincorporated businesses over the same period.

The number of business high court judgments (HCJs) fell to 14, the lowest on record for a third quarter.The value of business judgments in the High Court fell 96 percent to £1,041,640, while the average value of these judgments was £74,403, 93 percent less than a year prior.

  • Total value: £23.8m (up four percent)
  • Average value: £2,897 (down three percent)

High Court judgments against businesses Q3 2017

  • Total number: 14 (down 12)
  • Total value: £1,041,640 (down £25.2m)
  • Average value: £74,403 (down £936,464)
